SMART POWER SYSTEMS PART 1/2

Smart-Power-Systems-1-2

Well-functioning power systems and electricity markets are key to increase economic growth and competitiveness. As new economic, environmental and reliability challenges emerge, business as usual is not an option.

The three most important main elements of any power system are

  • Reliability.
  • Affordability.
  • Sustainability.

The purpose of this two-part article is to describe these three cornerstones, to analyze the dynamics between them and to suggest flexibility as being a solution for achieving the required equilibrium, thus enabling power system optimization. The outcome is a broad roadmap to Smart Power Systems (SPS). By our definition, Smart Power System is a regional power system where reliability, affordability and sustainability are in a desired, harmonic balance.
