MEXICO IS QUICKLY CHANGING
ITS ENERGY LAWS

This new strategy aims to attract private and international investors, thus changing the situation in the energy market. The new law paves the way for IPPs (independent power producers) opening the door to projects that will help the Mexican energy sector to cover not only the domestic demand but also giving the option to export electricity to its neighboring countries.

Investors in new power plants, as well as those responsible for political decisions, they face major challenges with regard to achieving safe, affordable and clean electricity supply. There are many uncertainties about the availability of fuel, emission limits and changing economics.

WHY FLEXIBILITY IS KEY

In southern Mexico, the base load is about the same in summer and winter, as in the Netherlands. Electricity use per capita in Mexico is the fourth part of the Netherlands and only 12 % of the Arab Emirates. Most of the electricity produced in Mexico (about 60 %) is used in the industry.

The inclusion of more variable renewables in the system, with a goal of 35% of energy production by 2030 in mind, will pose a new challenge the Mexican power system was not designed for. There is only one way to deal with this - more flexibility.

After midnight, the demand generally is minimized because there is less human activity. In the morning when people wake up, turn on appliances, railway systems intensify their activity, open offices, shops prepare to start the activity and factories increased energy demand.

 

The demand for electrical energy changes continuously, depending on the time of day, day of the week and season.

In many hot climates , air conditioning consumes a lot of electricity, and electricity demand reaches the peak after noon, when the effects of solar radiation are highest. However, the typical patterns of energy demand vary widely in different countries.
